ishot_55Today’s Scripture: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10

I am grateful for the truth of this verse–the name of the Lord is our strong tower.  A person’s name is a distinguishing mark of their person.  In fact, the Bible says that a good name is more valuable than gold and silver.  Our name is how we’re known and remembered.  In the Bible, we discover that a person’s name often revealed their character.  This is especially true of the Lord.  Friend, He has a good name, and as believers we are to make much of His name!  Consider some truths for just a moment about the Lord’s name:

First, there is SAFETY in the name of the Lord.  Proverbs tells us here that since the Lord’s name is a “strong tower,” we can run to it and find safety.  At His name, the enemy of our soul must flee.  In seasons of distress and in the heat of spiritual conflict, you should simply mention the name of the Lord.  At the mention of His name, all of Hell trembles!

Second, there is STRENGTH in the name of the Lord.  When you feel spiritually and physically and emotionally depleted, you can find strength in the name of the Lord.  A good illustration of this can be found in Acts 16 where we read that Paul and Silas were in prison.  They had been beaten and battered and thrown in a cold jail cell.  Yet the Bible says that at midnight, they were praying and singing hymns to God.  Their strength didn’t come from their outer circumstances; their strength came from inner confidence in the name of the Lord.

Third, there is SUFFICIENCY in the name of the Lord.  As weak sinners, it is so easy for us to magnify our need.  We are often tempted to covet what we don’t have because we think that if we have it, it will bring us the satisfaction that we lack.  The truth, however, is that when we have Jesus, we already have all that we need!  Jesus meets us at our point of need according to His glorious riches.  He is our sufficiency.

Last of all, there is SALVATION in the name of the Lord.  When the angel appeared to Joseph in Matthew 1:21, he instructed him to name the Son that would be born ‘Jesus,’ for He would save His people from their sins.  Jesus is the only name that saves sinners!  The Bible says in Acts 4:12 that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.  Be grateful today for the safe, strong, sufficient, saving name of Jesus.
