“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your home, when you walk by the way, and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7
One of the things that the church should continually emphasize is the priority of family worship in the home. The best place to start making disciples is right there in your own home with your own children. I’m grateful for the dynamic children’s ministries there are in churches today. When new families come to our church, they are most curious about what will be offered to their children. For this reason, we should place a high priority on children and students. But in many ways, I’m afraid that many Christian parents have simply “outsourced” the spiritual development of their children to the church rather than seeing to it themselves that their children are being brought up in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. The church has the responsibility of partnering with Christian parents in order to provide instruction and encouragement for mom and dad, but God intends for parents to intentionally disciple their children in the faith. Parents are to share the gospel with their children. Parents are to teach their children to pray. Parents are to teach their children to read God’s Word. The followers of Jesus Christ should have homes that are absolutely saturated with the truth of Scripture. Fathers, you should regularly read Scripture to your children. When dad opens up his Bible, it communicates the importance of God’s Word to his children. If you are a single mom, I pray that God encourages you and gives you an extra measure of strength because so much is on your shoulders.
Families must be diligent to worship together in our fast paced society because they are being pulled in so many different directions. Media and technology intrudes further into our lives than it ever has before. Some kind of machine or electronic device is always on in our homes these days–HDTV’s, smart phones, computers, iPad’s, etc. To get closer to God as a family, you are going to have to “turn off” other things for a season and “tune in” to God’s Word. It will completely change the dynamic in your home.
