Proverbs 30:5
One of the most important pieces of armor in the days of hand to hand combat was a soldier’s shield. It was a defensive weapon that guarded the soldier from the enemy’s advances. God is shield to those who trust Him. He is a strong tower for those who run to Him for help. The ‘name’ of the Lord signifies all of His glorious and wonderful attributes. Because of who He is and what He does, those who trust in Him don’t ever have to worry. He is always our refuge and strength.
We cannot overestimate the protection we find in God’s Word and in the One who stands behind what He has said. In order to trust in the Lord, we must have the instruction of His Word. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Scripture is the word of faith that generates and nourishes faith in our hearts, and we can always depend on His promise.
One of the ways that God promises to be a shield to us is through His guidance. He guides our steps and guards our lives. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” This is promise that will never fail. God expects us to be responsible, but we must never lean on our own understanding. We must humble ourselves before Him and seek His direction in all things, and we must be sure our motives are right. We have the promise that God will never guide us to a place where He cannot also shield us.
