The last four verses of Daniel 9 record what, in many ways, is the ‘Rosetta Stone’ of prophecy, a key to understanding the big picture of God’s plan for the ages.  Many have referred to this passage as the ‘backbone’ of Bible prophecy.  It is one of the most remarkable and specific passages that are recorded in Scripture as it relates to the future coming of Christ.  Isaac Newton once said, “We could stake the truth of Christianity on this prophecy alone, made five centuries before Christ.” This is not the first prophecy concerning the future that Daniel had been shown.  The other two important prophecies came in chapters 2 and 7, both of which concerned the future of Gentile world powers. The prophecy here, however, deals with God’s plan for the Jewish nation and the future of His redemptive plan.
